The weekend in Instagram

My weekend started early when I went for a sushi date, followed by margaritas at Cabrito with the bestie. It made for a difficult day after, but good margaritas and great company are always worth the ensuing headache. The headache was made easier by getting a few spoils. My Blackcherry backpack arrived which I treated myself to after we booked and paid for our trip to Thailand for later this year. Yay! Then I got a little surprise from Ambri Designs - which I cannot wait to tell you about soon.

The rest of the weekend was actually rather relaxed. We grabbed some burgers at Gibsons in the Waterfront before watching The Wolf of Wall Street - which you have to go and see. It was a whopping 3 hours long, but felt like a 90 minute flick. It is just that action packed.

On Saturday I went for a great 10km run in preparation for Two Oceans, followed by another trip to NĂ¼ for another hit of green juice. That evening we had a good 'ol braai with friends. Nothing beats braai'd meat and a rich potato salad.

Finally, on Sunday, we spent the day at the beach with my folks and the 3 furry misfits at the beach. It was a perfect day out. We followed our walk with a pizza picnic overlooking the beach before heading home and hitting the couch - not before our weekly frozen yogurt fix of course!

I also had to add in this week's Throwback Thursday pic of us at the Vic Falls - only because there is also one of my two new additions to the lounge, my little giraffes that I picked up at one of the markets while we were in Zambia. I'll be doing a post on our trip this week - I have loads of tips to share!

Splurge vs Steal

The "Splurge vs Steal" kind of post is one of my favorites from the many international fashion blogs that I read on the daily. I love a bargain as much as I love an investment piece and I noticed that we don't have many fashion bloggers doing these kind of comparisons here in SA. Perhaps because we don't have as many of the higher end brands to draw a comparison to. That being said, the world is a small place thanks to the internet and I know so many people who shop overseas brands online. This, coupled with the fact that we are a season behind, we generally always take our fashion inspiration from foreign shores and foreign brands anyway.

I saw these leopard print sneakers on my favorite San Francisco based blogger, Julia Hengel of Gal Meets Glam and immediately clicked through to see where they're from. For $100 (around R1000), these Sam Edelman numbers are not badly priced - especially by American standards. However, once you add shipping costs, customs and duties, us hard done by South Africans would be forking out closer to R2000.
Lucky for you, I found a pair at Mr Price for a fraction, of a fraction, and then knock off another fraction of the price. The Mr P version is a measly R79,99. Yes, its not quite the same faux fur fanciness that the Sam Edelman pair possess - but for a pair of trendy sneakers that you'll use for barely a season, why bother? Chic, comfy and cheap but not nasty. Pair these with a pair of ripped boyfriend jeans or black skinny jeans and a white tank and you're done.

The weekend in Instagram

This weekend was definitely of the asian persuasion! It was all about sushi, thai food and more thai food. Which is ironic as we're busy finalising plans on a trip to Thailand later this year. So I'll see all the calories as dietary acclimatization for the upcoming holiday.

Erawan in Durbanville is a real shining star out that side of the world, as there aren't many great dining options. It is some of the best Thai food you'll have anywhere and it was a perfect spot for our girl's night. If you go, try the coconut rice.

The next evening we celebrated my sister-in-law's birthday at Sawadee - which I have been dying to try for a while now. It certainly did not disappoint, with the best duck spring rolls I've ever had. We also shared a tempura calamari starter that was so satisfyingly light and crispy, with a wonderful sweet chili sauce. I had the pad thai and Dave had the honey chicken and we were both delighted with our choices.

On Saturday we kicked off the day with a serious run to get our Two Oceans training going. It was the perfect opportunity to refuel our tired bodies at Sea Point's new health food destination, NĂ¼. I tried the D-Tox green juice which was filled with all kinds of goodness such as spinach, celery, cucumber, ginger, apple and lemon and Dave and I both had the Hearti wrap which was packed with roasted butternut, feta, greens, sprouts, sesame seeds and a yummy red onion relish.

Nuri was our last stop on our asian food binge this weekend - as ever it never disappoints. This was followed by a nice walk along the prom with some great friends, and a stop for some frozen yogurt.
I was totally spoilt with a belated Christmas pressie and am obsessed with the macaron shaped ring box!

I also had to add in a picture of my beloved pooch, Vida. We took her to the puppy parlour for a summer cut. I had no idea this meant such a close shave! She looks utterly ridiculous, but I have to say she is much happier with less hair in this heat. Just look at that smiling face!

This week brings all kinds of changes and challenges - 2014 is set to be the year I make hard and fast decisions on my career, and also my physical and mental health. This week is going to be one of those weeks where some of those decisions will be made. Wish me luck!

Deer Ruby at Style36.co.za

Style36 is always adding great new brands to their site. I check in weekly to see what is new. This week I was pleasantly surprised by a new jewellery brand called Deer Ruby. As you may know by now, I am such a sucker for tiny, dainty pieces and this whole range ticks those boxes. The prices aren't bad, and range between R249 and R899.
There are so many pieces online, but here are my favorites - there are a few, so go make some tea and then come back and scroll through all the dainty, pretty baubles!

(To get to Style36, click on the link to the right of this post. Support a struggling blogger with a little love - I get a teeny commission on any purchases you make after click through the ad on my blog. And this baby needs a facelift - the blog, not me - and facelifts are not free.)
