The weekend in Instagram

It was definitely a weekend for the books. I need another weekend to recover from it. Although I did get some down time at the spa on Sunday.
We had a little date night on Friday at Sevruga, but what we were really excited about trying was the cheesecake at Salero. One of Dave's clients said it was THE best cheesecake in Cape Town and that it easily trumps our beloved New York Bagels baked cheesecake. I wouldn't say better, but definitely as good. I highly recommend you go try it. It is rather deloish! The rest of the night was spent in ridiculous beanies while watching movies and cuddling on the couch. What I don't recommend is wasting your life watching either The Lone Ranger or Paperboy. Both movies were snooze-fests.

On Saturday we headed off to the Root44 Market in Stellenbosch to celebrate the besties birthday. I finally tried that eisbein burger and it is by far the best market food I have ever had. We also tried a ginger beer flavoured beer that we loved. Definitely investing in a case or two of that for the bar.  I also found the cutest onesie in the entire world and wanted to buy one for my future spawn, but the husband thought I was being weird. So I'll just buy it next time when he's not looking. Come on, Mini Pooper, is that not too sweet?
We had our very special friend Tom with us, who is desperate to crack a mention on the blog. So everyone, meet Tom:

Like I said, a very special friend.
His wife, my number 5, is very proud.
We had a mini-bachelorette on Saturday night for our gorgeous friend Keri who is getting married in Joburg in September. Sadly a few of us Cape Town girls couldn't make the bachelorette up there so we took the opportunity to have a little one while our girl was down here for work.
It got messy. As in "photos-not-safe-for-facebook" messy. Drag queens, champagne and an endless flow of wine and shooters and a dodgy rum and Sparletta infused after-party at my place ended in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The hangover gods were kind for whatever reason and I woke up feeling quite fresh on Sunday so I could take the bestie out for her birthday spoil at Angsana Spa at the Vineyard Hotel without feeling like death. If you haven't been, go for the Glow Package. Its a heavenly scrub followed by a blissful hour long massage. We then had a lovely brunch and went home for a post-massage power nap.
I didn't have too long to unwind because it was up and out of the house again for an early dinner to celebrate the big little brother's birthday. Happy Birthday Toad!!!
You might think you have a cool sibling, but you really don't.
I, however, do. Your sibling team will never be quite as cool at Team Rhodes. Fact.

Beauty heroes every girl should travel with

In less than 2 weeks I'll be off on my big, fat, American holiday. I've done this trip a few times now and I am getting quite good at traveling with minimal fuss and maximum organization. The biggest drawback when traveling to the USA is the long haul flight. Its about 22 hours from here to New York, and then we still have to catch a flight to the other side of the country. The New York to San Francisco flight is about 6 hours. So we'll be stuck in a plane for over a day. Your skin and body hates you for this and will turn on you and make sure you disembark looking haggard and hideous - so you need to be prepared. Below are my carry-on heroes that help ensure I arrive at my destination looking fresh!

1) Lush Vanilla Puff for keeping fresh, dry and having a subtle vanilla scent to comfort you for the entire trip. This is also a great alternative to deodorant on the flight.

2) Johnson & Johnson facial wipes. These are simply a must-have item when traveling. For face and body, when you just need to freshen up.

3) Revlon BB Cream. I use this in my daily make-up routine and I'll definitely be popping it into my carry-on travel bag. Its super hydrating, with the added benefit of giving you light coverage and leaving you looking dewy and refreshed.

4) Environ C-Quence eye gel. You're going to be sleeping as much as you can on a long haul flight, but you won't look like you have without a little help. Let this award winning eye gel plump up and revitalize your peeps while you fly.

5) Batiste Dry Shampoo mini. This little guy is perfect for travel. Spritz some in just before landing and brush through and you'll look and feel fresher for it. (available at Clicks)

6) Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream. Do I really need to explain why you need this? Take a mini one along to keep in line with LAG's requirements. Its for eyes, lips, eyebrows, hair styling, and so much more.

7) No-Jet-Lag homeopathic jet-lag prevention. Trying this out after having it recommended by endless well-traveled friends. Hope it works as when we arrive, we're heading straight out to see the sights and go for a beer or 6!

8) The Body Shop Vit C Energising Face Mist. I have been using this one and the Vitamin E one on my travels for years. It not only rehydrates your skin and prevents it from taking a beating from that revolting airplane dry air, but also sets your make-up. Bonus!

New in: Chunky Knits at Spree.co.za

Its freezing today and the rain bucketing down inspired me to hunt for some chunky winter knits. I think we've been in denial about winter this year in Cape Town, thanks to some seriously bipolar weather.
Alas, August will always bring the big freeze so I suggest you stock up one all things warm and fuzzy.
I've sourced these options from a new favorite, spree.co.za
They are a fairly new online store stocking the best selection of brands. What makes them exciting is that they have partnered with the top glossy mags in the country, who then have their own stores within the online store. So your favorite fashion ed has expertly curated a gorgeous selection of trendy picks for you to shop from. It really is the latest fashion at your finger tips.

I'm no fashion ed, but nonetheless, here are my picks for some winter warmers from Spree:

Top middle: Fluffy cream knit from Slick, R700
Top right: Polka dot knit from Sass, R820

Bottom left: Bird print knit from G-Couture, R380
Bottom middle: Metallic knit from Sass, R680 on sale!
Bottom right: Cobalt blue stud knit from G-Couture, R290 on sale!

The weekend in Instagram

I was in serious need of a relaxed weekend so that is exactly what this weekend was about. Food, family and relaxing.
Friday kicked off nicely with a lovely present in the post. My Balm Balm prize arrived from the fabulous Tanya Kovarsky. (Check out her gorgeous mummy blog here ). I can't wait to start trying these products out. I have only heard rave reviews.
We then went to Saigon for dinner. In all the years that it has been around, I have never been. I might be the only person in Cape Town who has never been. Well, now that I have, I can see why it has been around so long. The dumplings are to die for, and the calamari with a chili cilantro dipping sauce was amazing. I'll be back just for those.

Saturday we had every intention of going for a long run, but slept in and went for brunch with friends instead. Brunch at Manna Epicure was heavenly. The french toast croissant with brie, bacon and maple syrup was the winner. Brunch then turned into coffee and cake and we sampled their wheat-free chocolate cake. You need to try this if you are there. It is so decadent. Wheat-free = Calorie-free in my books. So go on and indulge guilt free.
After so much food the only logical thing to do was have an afternoon nap. Following that blissful quiet time, we felt that we needed to do something about all the indulgence so we went for a nice, long promenade walk and took in the sunset.
This was followed by a lazy night in, watching movies, making Martha Stewarts very yummy "one-pot pasta" dish and devouring the leftover cake. (We may, or may not have bought a few extra slices to take away).

On Sunday I started off the day with a walk along the promenade on my way to yoga class. I am so happy to be getting back into yoga. My body and mind are already reaping the benefits. I love that I have a studio within walking distance. How can you not be at peace when you complete a yoga class, and then get to walk along the seaside on your way home?
A good old fashioned family braai in the afternoon topped the weekend off - complete with a plethora of salads and sides, and finished off with malva pudding. Happy full bellies and yet another afternoon nap.

Life is good.
