Splurge vs Steal

Sometimes you see something in store and think its okay, but not your thing. Then a little while later you'll see that same thing, or something similar on someone else and becomes something you absolutely have to have in your life. This is the case in today's Splurge vs Steal post. I saw these Jenni Kayne flats last year on holiday and thought they were pretty - and pretty bloody pricey too and moved on.
Then my all-time favourite bloggess, Emily Schuman, from Cupcakes and Cashmere picked them up and featured them in numerous style posts and I became obsessed with finding something locally that came close. And I came up empty handed and down trodden. Here are some of her posts featuring some of the chicest flats I have ever seen.

After all these months, I have finally found an alternative. The Thurman pony hair slipper from Stylemology. And they deliver to your door. Bonus, no mall trawl for these babies.
The Jenni Kayne ones are sold out - in case you were actually contemplating dropping six grand on a pair of shoes. So your only option is the Thurman pair from Stylemology. To be honest, I prefer their full slipper as opposed to the JK pointy flats. Probably because they are more casual and that suits my day-to-day work life a little better than the points would.
For R899, they are yours - available now.

Life via iPhone

I have been a busy beetle of late. Work has been surprisingly manic - not complaining. But it has made blogging difficult because by the time I get home I am ready to crash! That coupled with events and special occassions, a bout of tummy flu - it is definitely time for a spa day!

That being said, I have been thoroughly spoilt. Last week I was invited to spend a night at Tintswalo Atlantic in Hout Bay for their Winter Wedding event. I found myself planning my dream wedding/vow renewal - I have never seen a venue that needs so little added to it to make it into a dream wedding. The natural beauty of the seaside location will take your breath away. The decor is on another level and you literally only need to add fairy lights and some flowers and the rest is perfect as it is. I'll do a full post on the venue later this week. I really cannot wait to share more about it.

We also survived a camping weekend two weeks ago. In fact, I loved it. Camping in winter was a great excuse to bring out the bright red Hunter wellies and stomp around in the dirt. As always, with my group of crazies, things got out of hand and there was fire-side dancing (booze induced of course) and very childish behaviour - we're sorry we had to shave off your goatee Tom. A bet is a bet ;-)

On a random note - Marshmallow Fluff is popping up on our shelves. So far I've discovered it at YuppieChef, Dischem, Spar and Sweets from Heaven. I can eat an entire jar of this stuff in one sitting. It is one of my favourite indulgences, and very much not Tim Noakes approved.

This past weekend was payday - can you tell? I hit up a few of my favourite places, and also finally bought a few cult beauty products from Kiehls. I am trying out their Ultra Facial Toner, their lip blame and the very popular Midnight Recovery Concentrate. I also picked up some cheap and cheerful brushes from Beautique at Edgars, and some knock-off Beauty Blender sponges from Clicks.  I'll let you know how those work out soon. This beauty haul also got me in the mood for organising my make-up properly and I now have a very pretty, and very functional little beauty corner on my dressing table thanks to my lovely 27Pinkx organiser. Seriously, this thing is life changing.

The week ahead sees a much anticipated blogger dinner happening, a weekend away, and a few other life changing appointments I'll share with you in good time.

Have a fab week pretty people!
xx

Splurge vs Steal

The gold boyfriend watch is as much a necessity to any girls' wardrobe as a great pair of boyfriend jeans. You don't even need an actual boyfriend. Just a decent credit limit. Ok, maybe go find a boyfriend for this one, and abuse his credit limit.

Most of the time, I lean towards the "Steal" option in these posts. I love a little cheap and chic and get such a kick out of finding great style items at a fraction of the cost. But this little gold Asos number just isn't going to cut it for me this time.

A gold Michael Kors watch is the Cinderella's slipper of the watch world. It truly has the power to change your life. The chic design, impeccable quality and the delight in owning a classic time piece will make you feel like you can conquer the world. I never feel anything less when I am wearing mine. It is probably one of my favorite pieces and certainly one of the best things I have ever splurged on.
This one is the perfect classic shape, available at Watch Republic for R3999.

Style: 5 Tips on How to look Taller

Sometimes being petite and a little on the short side rocks. You can get away with killer heels and most boys are taller than you. But other times, its just frustrating. You look chunkier than you actually are in some clothes, and this season's over-the-knee flat boots make you want to cry because you look like this:

I've made peace with the fact that I don't have pins like Gisele and over the years, I've found that a few simple styling tricks make me seem a little bit taller than I am.

1) Put your hair up in a top knot.
This might seem obvious - but it really works. It adds height and creates a desirable vertical line.

2) Wear pointed flats.
This lengthens the line of your legs. Pointed heels do this job even better, but who is honestly going to burst a vein wearing sky-high heels every single day amiright?

3) Wear one colour from top to bottom.
This is the ultimate short-girl tip. This makes you look like a much longer and leaner lady. Black is best and eternally chic.

4) Use skinny belts, never thick ones.
You want to define your waist, not cut yourself in half - and thick belts do this to us girls closer to the ground.

5) Wear a v-neck.
These should be the staple in every petite girl's wardrobe. The v-neck creates a longer and leaner torso, highlights your collar bones and makes your boobs look great.

New at PUMA Select CT

If you kids haven't been down to Bree Street yet to check out the very first PUMA concept store of it's kind, then you are seriously missing out. I love street style and no one gets it right more that my friends over at PUMA. The PUMA Select store carries limited edition designer colab ranges and stock is updated all the time.

When they first opened, I spied some amazing McQueen wedges on the PR chicas and was instantly jealous. I was torn between splurging on the kicks on opening night, or waiting it out for the wedges that were due to arrive in May. In the end I bought the high-top kicks and pretty much live in them. But now May is upon us and the wedges are in stock. Now my wallet is itchy and my eyes are lusting after these gorgeous wedge sneakers.

At R5999, they are a major splurge - but the McQueen Ofeya wedge is made of a luxurious mix of leather and suede, with gold accents and a pattern inspired by the PUMA King football boot. The wedge is concealed and they look more like high-top kicks than an obvious wedged sneaker which I think keeps them out of dangerously trendy territory. And anything that gives you extra length on your pins is always a winner.

New in at Clicks

I know we all suffer from the same problem when it comes to Clicks. You have a list when you walk in, but then you meander over to the make-up section, and then the haircare section, and then there are new bath and pamper goodies on the shelves….and then its R1000 later.
"I'm just running into Clicks for some essentials" is that same as that age old lie, "I'm just going out for one quick drink". It has the same after effects too - you're in your bathroom wondering how on earth you got to that point, and then you check your wallet and want to cry.

So, to help you blow off that pointless list, here are some new things from our favorite drugstore for you to try out next time you're popping in for some "essentials"

Lee Stafford shampoos, conditioners and treatments. I am obsessed. I was sent a few items from the blonde shampoo range and the Argan oil range. Love how much better my colour looks thanks to these. I have managed to last almost 3 months without highlights so keeping my locks from looking brassy is no easy task - and therefore I will happily vouch for the blonde shampoo range.
From the Argan oil range I was given the Miracle Heat Defense spray and the Miracle Shine Spray - and I am really enjoying both, particularly the shine spray. It adds shine to dry locks without weighing my hair down. Because my hair is short I have to be extra careful not to spray too near the roots as it can end up looking greasy - but for you mermaid haired ladies, go nuts, you'll love it.

Hand Chemistry promises to fight the 8 signs of hand aging and to deliver results in 11 days, with continued improvement over 2 months. I don't really have an issue in the hand department so I can't tell you if it really does combat the signs of hand aging. What I can tell you is that is smells heavenly, absorbs quickly and my hands feel like a baby's. I keep it on my bedside table and use it daily. At R300 its a total spoil, and more than most would spend on a hand cream, but I think it would make an amazing gift. Too late for Mother's Day, but for her birthday perhaps? Will I repurchase once mine runs out? Probably yes. I've been forever ruined by how luxurious this one is and don't know if another hand cream will come close.

Next up is an interesting product. They are basically elixirs which remind me of a high school friend's mother, who was forever getting us to swallow this bright pink stuff. She swore we wouldn't get sick and would have lots of energy. And while it did nothing for me, my friend who took it daily was never, ever ill, and was more energy than I could handle on most days - so maybe his mom was right.

These two liquid supplements are retailing at R300 each. The first is called The Beauty Molecule and contains a potent molecule called Resveratol, found in grape skins and Japanese knotweed. The benefits are the slowing of the aging process - so the idea is to take this daily and prevent aging from the inside out.

The second is called The  Hyaluronic Molecule. Hyaluronic acid is known for it's ability to hold 100 times it's weight in water and is hence a very interesting development in anti-aging. It lubricates and cushions the joints and provides a plumper and better support structure for your skin. So by taking this daily, you're encouraging your bod to hydrate from the inside out. And we all know that hydrated skin means less wrinkles, and even less break-outs.

Thats it for now ladies. Until next time, enjoy your next drugstore haul!

xx
Leigh

New from Elizabeth Arden

Got 5 minutes? Then you have no excuses not to give your tired, winter dried skin some love.
Elizabeth Arden has brought us a boosting 5-minute facial which helps support the skin's elasticity and allows skin to absorb the amazing serum that is the EA Ceramide Capsules Daily Youth Restoring Serum. But don't worry if you are using another serum, I found it works just as well with my favorite night time serum.

The kit includes a Self Foaming Mask which I loved! The tingling feeling of the enzymes exfoliating away dead skin feels amazing. This step dissolves skin clogging impurities and primes your mug for the best possible results.

Then part 2 of this little wünder-kit is the Replenishing Serum which you slap on afterwards, which calms your skin and promotes your skin's own natural ceramides using a targeted complex of ceramides 1,3 and 6 and soothing agents.
I've been testing this out for about a month now, ever since the sweetest peas at Elizabeth Arden sent it over, and I have found it has become a weekly must-add to my my routine to give my skin a much needed lift. I have found so far that it really makes my skin look firmer and smoother and really has helped with my skin tone.

This 5 minute wonder is suitable for all skin types, but particularly for those looking at combating the signs of aging. Use it weekly, or the night before s special occasion - yes, I also panicked at the thought of using a enzyme packed mask the day before an event, but it hasn't let me down yet and is a perfect way to prep your skin.

Available from Edgars, Woolworths, Foschini and Truworths nationwide, at R795
