Show me your Mani with Revlon

I haven't had a giveaway in a while, so what better way to kick off the upcoming season of giving than with a rather practical giveaway with one of my most adored beauty brands?

It is time for mani's and pedi's and getting the bod in ship-shape for summer, and Revlon have kindly provided me with just the kit to get your hands and feet looking pose-perfect.

The prize is a fantastic collection of their nail care products, including their Treat & Grow polish, a French Manicure kit, the miraculous 60 Seconds Quick Dry Spray, Anti-Aging hand cream, Acetone free Nail Enamel Remover, and much more. The prize is worth over R1000. So if this kit doesn't give you perfectly soft and manicured paws, then best you invest in some gloves or an electric sander.

To enter to win the whole lot, either Tweet me and Revlon (@prettymintblog & @RevlonSA), with a picture of your mani.

OR

Tag me and Revlon on Instagram (@prettymintblog & @RevlonSA) with a picture of your mani.

Easy as that. I'll pick my favourite and announce a winner on Friday afternoon.

LBD of the week

Seeing as Spree has launched their Spring/Summer look board recently, I thought I'd turn to them for inspiration for this week's LBD of the Week.

Wedding and party season is fast approaching to you might want to start thinking about investing in a versatile black dress to carry you through in style. Like I said in my post on the Spree Lookboard event, these designer collections are going to fly out of there fast, this Gert-Johan Coetzee number included.

This bodycon dress with frill detailing all up the side, and over the shoulder is perfect for any office party, wedding or year-end soirée. It has a 5% spandex content which sucks in the wobbly bits and helps create a slender silhouette. This has to be my favourite #LBDofTheWeek so far. Designed by a local fashion industry legend, just for Spree, to be rocked by you.

New in the Hair Aisle

I think I've mentioned this before, but does anyone ever leave Clicks with only what they initially walked in to buy?
I never, ever do. I have a list, and then within 10 minutes, I've filled half a basket and not even glanced at my shopping list yet.
The beauty and hair aisles get me every time. Clicks has a few new fancy-pants suits in their marketing and logistics team, and you can tell by all of the new brands and fabulous products that are hitting our shores daily and being stocked at your good 'ol neighbourhood Clicks. Just wait until the Christmas range descends on us....then you'll be seeing a beauty feeding frenzy, and I'll be leading the pack.

To start off, I have some hair goodies to show you. The first is a hair curler that is taking names and gaining a serious cult following.  It is called the Babyliss Curl Secret. I must admit, that due to my hair being short and comprising of only about 3 hairs, I am not the target market. So in the name of research, I sat through a few demos on some willing participants. It really is idiot-proof. Seriously. If you're struggling with curling your hair using a straightener, then listen up. In fact, watch these amazing demos from fellow blogger babes, Luzanne from Pink Peonies and Anja from Glitz and Grammar. They have mermaid hair and show you how it's done beautifully.

Next up is the new range from Schwarzkopf. I have been a fan of this brand for years, and always have both their salon and retail range in my shower. This new range is called MILLION GLOSS and after using it for a few days, it really did make my hair look shinier.  They talk about a concentrated gloss elixir, which sounds wonderful. But, like I said above, I don't have much to work with. My crowning glory is fine and thin, so products that promise shine, also generally promise a ton of grease too. So I am quite chuffed to report the non-greasiness of this product. Thin-haired girls, use without fear. It is definitely worth adding to your haircare artillery for when your hair is looking rather dull.

Both products are available at Clicks currently.

Spree Lookboard SS2014

Spree.co.za has upped the game to a new level. Other online retailers are doing the odd designer collaboration, which is cute. Cute in comparison to the starting line-up Spree just unveiled anyway.

We're talking about Thula Sindi, Clive Rundle, Gert-Johan Coetzee and Mareth Colleen to name a few. These are some of South Africa's finest (in case you're reading this from abroad, or are South African and live under a rock). Having access to their genius is a game-changer and you'd better be quick on the button because these are going to sell out fast.

Here are some of my favourites from the look board below...

Snapshots from Koh Samui

This leg of our Thailand holiday was my favourite. Samui has a little bit of everything that makes a holiday perfect. Firstly, the island is gorgeous. It is postcard-perfect wherever you look. The weather is idyllic and the sea is warm enough to spend all day in.
Secondly, it is whatever you want it to be. If you're looking to relax on the beach or poolside, you can find plenty of that. The beaches are pristine and you can lay on a lounger or hire a lilo and take your sun-worshipping into the sea.
If you're looking for some adventure, you can't go wrong with Samui. We snorkelled, kayaked, hired scooters, went paddle-boarding and hiked up to more than a few view-points and waterfalls. Then there are the Big Buddhas, temples and Grandmother and Grandfather rocks to go and check out.

On top of all of this, there are beach bars dotted along the beach which make for some really fun holiday night-life (Ark Bar got the better of me on more than one occasion). And shopping is around just about every corner, also until the wee hours. The vendors in Samui were a lot less aggressive with their haggling. and we found bargaining and buying here more pleasant than in Phuket. We also found the biggest bikini shop we'd ever seen, called Amazonas, and bought up a storm.

Somehow, while we were so very busy taking it all in, we managed to leave the island totally relaxed. I have never fallen in love with a place so quickly in all my life. Aside from all the points I mentioned above, the people were impossibly friendly and helpful, the food....oh the food. If you go, find a little hole in the wall called Green Bird. Try the shredded pork with the cucumber and peanut dipping sauce( pictured below). You can thank me later.
Another spot to spend a day is at Beach Republic. Its the Samui version of Shimmy Beach and a fabulously chic place to hang out and enjoy some designer cocktails and lurk at their infinity pool overlooking the beach.

My heart is still lying on a beach in Koh Samui. I can see why so many people go back year after year, or even take a leap of faith and move there. Although, it really isn't much of a leap is it? More like a total no-brainer, really.

Shiny things: Kaika

Every now and then, a local jewellery designer pops up that just blows you away. Kaika is my latest obsession, because the pieces are so unique, and so versatile, they're perfect to wear with just about everything. Sharmn Cola was tired of having the same accessories as everyone else, so she started her jewellery line for the woman who wants to be bold, different and stylish. And who doesn't want to be all of those things? Sending Sharmn the highest of fives all round.

This is one of those posts where I could use up all my bandwidth on images. I wanted to put every single piece from the line in here! To see everything, you'll have to pop over to their website or Facebook page. But for now, here are just a few of my favourites.

Event: Forever 21 Opening

I mentioned in my last post that Forever 21 is opening this week, and that they were having a media launch this week. Sadly I didn't win the competition for that shopping voucher - next time.
It didn't matter much though, because the store itself brought enough joy and delight, and I shopped to my heart's content.
It was a blast to get a preview of what you girls can expect on Saturday. There is quite literally, something for everyone. The store is divided into subsections such as denim, lingerie, accessories, basics, shoes etc. The clothes are also divided into sections according to the type of girl that section appeals to - so rocker chick, bohemian babe, workwear, and so much more.

I quite honestly lost my mind, and frequently caught myself standing, mouth open, gaping at the rails of clothing. After about 2 hours of making my way through every single rail, I walked out with my selection. I spent more than I intended, but I'm not even sorry.
By the way, just like their American stores, you are given a giant black shopping bag to use while you peruse the store. It makes it all too easy to pile masses of items into it, and therefore very hard to pick just one or two things to buy. You just end up doing a defeated shoulder shrug and saying "F**k it, I'll take it all". And so my life on the streets begins...

Price-wise, they're on par with Cotton On I'd say. It is more expensive than in the USA, but with import duties and such, that is expected. It is still very affordable high-fashion, and with stock that changed daily, you'll never run out of options. Or reasons to bankrupt yourself in my case.

So pop down on Saturday. Here are some pictures of what you have to look forward to.

Forever 21 Spring look

Forever 21 is opening this week after much anticipation. Especially from my part. Each trip to the good 'ol US-of-A has resulted in a new suitcase purchase and this is mostly because of losing my mind in a Forever21 store. The price point is amazing, and the selection is so on trend. New styles are added daily so you can check back all the time for something new.

The team at Forever21 kindly invited me to check out a sample from their Spring collection and to pick out some of my favourite pieces to compile a look. They are then going to put my look up on their Facebook page and let their fans vote on the best blogger look. Now I am not really an "in-front-of-the-camera" kind of fashion blogger. I prefer the shopping and putting it together than I do the primping and pouting. But for some fun, and to celebrate the grand opening, I gave in and took a snap with my iPhone. The horror is below for your laughing pleasure....

So about my look... I chose a cute graphic lightweight knit (R429), a pair of high-waisted embroidered shorts (R579 and will be mine for sure), a wide brimmed sun-hat (R279), and a simple gold bar necklace (R79). I loved that all of these are perfect transitional items that look great together, but that will work with so pretty much everything in your wardrobe. The high waisted shorts are actually quite slimming over the bum and thighs, and they cover the muffin top that developed over the course of my Thailand holiday. Pad Thai isn't as healthy as I'd like to believe so it turns out.

Nevermind, the loose fit jersey covers my Winter sins while I work my tushy off and if I manage to snap one up at the launch, I think I'll probably live in it for the rest of the season. Its so soft and comfy and makes me feel happy.

The wide brimmed hat was chosen because I am beyond over fedoras and cowboy hats. Lets move on ladies. Try this ladylike number to cover a bad hair day and keep your face from getting old and  haggard in the sun.

Thats pretty much it. Now here is where you guys come in. After you've finished picking yourself up from the heap of giggles on the floor thanks to the above attempt at a fashion selfie, please go and vote. I am really in it for the glory, but the prize is pretty darn sweet too. Its a R2100 voucher to spend - and I'd love to share it with you guys should I win. So we both score R1050 to splurge on a few Spring goodies.
Head over to the Facebook page and go vote. Let me know that you have in the comments section and I'll do a draw on Thursday, so we can get the winner their voucher in time for the weekend.

Ok seriously, stop laughing now.

Snapshots from Phuket

Phuket was busy. Boy was it busy. We had 5 days and not one of them was spent idling on the beach. We made our base in the heart of the madness on Patong Beach so that we could walk most places. We shopped up a storm - particularly for new bikinis, while the boys used the 5 days wisely and had some suits tailored. We hit the mall, the stalls and everything in-between and even started to enjoy the inevitable haggling process. There are brand knock-offs for days if thats your thing, but there are plenty of other beachy items I found more worthwhile.

Island hopping was done via day trips to Phi Phi, James Bond Island and around the caves in Phang Nga Bay. The weather didn't always play along, but we got enough sunshine to see the famous beaches and get some great snaps. Phi Phi was spectacular and I would love to come back and spend a few days there to explore the island properly.

We hired a taxi for a day to see the major sights such as the Big Buddha, Old Phuket Town, some temples and view points. I think a future trip to Phuket would be based at Karon or Kata beaches - they're far more chilled out and the beaches are still pristine.
Old Phuket town has fabulous restaurants on every corner, and beautiful stores brimming with silks and intricately detailed fabrics. The old buildings and the locals and monks going about their lives is worth spending an afternoon just people-watching.

Seeing the Big Buddha was wonderful. It is bigger than you could imagine, and so very impressive. The whole site has the most unreal sense of calm, and we took the opportunity to pray with a monk. It was a simple  and brief encounter, but one I'll always cherish. I love the Buddhist way of life and the teachings are an endless resource of inspiration, and I find them soothing to the soul when I need it.

We also spent an afternoon at Siam Safari - an elephant encounter we were assured by a few sources that was well worth it and that the animals were treated well. We loved meeting a few of the younger elephants, and after lunch and a lesson in making chill paste, we took a short ride to a view point on elephant-back. Our mahout thought he was hilarious after realising we weren't loving the spiders in some of the trees and pretended to pick them up and throw them at us for most of the ride.
Spiders = Sense of Humour Failure.

Food-wise, my favourite meals were from stalls hitched to scooters on the street. Pad Thai was my dish of choice and each one was better then the last. Our snack or in-between meal that we couldn't get enough of was the banana and Nutella pancakes on every corner. I miss those so much!
Tripadvisor (good 'ol Tripadvisor) pointed us in the direction of Sabai Sabai. The Pad Thai was sensational, and the watermelon fruit shakes entrenched an addiction that will last a lifetime. It even sports a poster on one of the walls from our own V&A Waterfront congratulating it on being the best restaurant in Patong.

As far as nightlife goes, you don't have to try too hard to find it - follow the neon lights. Bangla Road is a myriad of neon lights, some questionable entertainment and also plenty of restaurants. The streets are packed with tourists, entertainers and the world-famous lady-boys. We didn't find them as pushy or creepy as we'd been warned about. A simple "no thanks" and a smile was sufficient. Drinks are cheap and generally the place is crawling with inebriated Aussies and Brits - which we thought was more funny than it was annoying. We had a few nights of too many cocktails and a little leg shaking - but mostly we left the total debauchery to the Aussies, and happily sat back and watched. On that note, don't do drugs kids. We saw Aussies getting up to some serious mischief while clearly very high. One even was getting a tattoo on the beach. On the beach! No clean sterile room, just aplastic chair and shirtless old Thai man inking the boy for life. Like I said, don't do drugs kids. Make good choices. This has been a PSA from Pretty Mint.

So thats the Phuket leg of our trip. I'll post on Samui later this week - you won't want to miss that one. It is the most wonderful island - and a place I will go back to again and again.

LBD of the week

I'm having a love affair with little black dresses lately. So I've decided to turn it into a feature on the blog. Each week I'll share a LBD that I'm eyeing out. We all know that every woman should have at least one in her closet, so we may as well try one on each week.

This week I'm loving this ponti and PU dress with the quilted detailing on the skirt. Its figure hugging, yet it skims the hips giving a lovely silhouette and hiding the jiggly bits. Its sexy without being overtly so, with just the right amount of faux leather detailing.

You can find it at Stylemology, and its on sale for R359,97! I think its a great little number to see you through the last of winter and the chilly early Spring days ahead.
